Season of Memories

Our son-in-law died 19 years ago – he was 39 years old.  A very difficult death for our family.  As Family Services Manager of Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery, I was fortunate to be able to help create the Holy Cross Christmas Remembrance Service that has become an annual event at the Cemetery.  It is also an annual event for our family.

Each year our family and CCFS’s staff attend this beautiful remembrance service where a few symbolic candles are lit in memory of deceased parents, children, brothers, sister, aunts, uncles, friends.  Paper ornaments hand decorated by school children are given to all who attend.  We write the names of our loved ones and messages of love on the back of these ornaments.

During this beautiful service, we are asked to come forward and hang our ornaments on Christmas Trees in the chapel.  After the service we visit John’s grave and decorate the grave with small Christmas Trees.

This tradition has become one that allows us time to reflect during this very hectic and joyful time, to remember John and all of those who are no longer with us.  If you have the opportunity to participate in a Remembrance Service during this Season of Memories, try to attend.  You may find healing and comfort there as our family has.
